As farming technology advances, producers are finding it increasingly difficult to source qualified technicians. Skilled individuals are often in short supply and can be costly to recruit and retain. At the same time, many young people complete training programmes without securing employment. This highlights a persistent disconnect between training systems and industry needs.
Education versus employability
A recurring theme in the conversation was the difference between education and employability. Producing graduates is not enough if they are unable to transition into productive roles within the economy. Too often, training programmes focus heavily on theory while providing limited workplace exposure. The result is that many learners enter the job market without the practical experience employers require.

While some businesses actively invest in apprenticeships and skills programmes, many smaller companies remain hesitant because of cost, administration, and regulatory requirements.
Yet the advantages are substantial. Businesses that invest in training are able to develop employees according to their specific operational needs while creating a pipeline of skilled workers for the future. Well-supported apprentices often become loyal, long-term employees who contribute significantly to business growth and productivity.
Government is also seeking to strengthen partnerships that support skills development. Efforts are underway to improve collaboration between the public and private sectors while exposing South African learners to international expertise and emerging agricultural technologies. At the same time, education curricula must continue to evolve to reflect the realities of modern agriculture, including fields such as drone technology, artificial intelligence, and digital farm management systems.

Funding – always a challenge
Funding remains a challenge, particularly for innovative training initiatives. Stakeholders emphasised that sustainable skills development requires more than financial support. Importantly, the purpose of skills development is also evolving. Employment remains a key objective, but there is growing recognition that training should also encourage entrepreneurship.
