The Grain SA/John Deere recipe competition gives you the opportunity to put your creativity in the kitchen to the test, while also standing a chance to be rewarded for it.

Our August winner* is: Johann de Bruyn from Great Brak River

SOYBEAN CON CARNE
Enough for six people

Ingredients
30 ml canola oil
½ cup dried soybeans (soaked overnight, rinsed, and boiled in fresh water for 90 minutes)
500 g lean minced beef
5 green chillies, finely chopped
2 onions, chopped
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp dried basil
1 tsp dried oregano
1 tsp dried thyme
1 tsp dried mint
30 ml white sugar
10 ml tomato paste
1 large celery stalk, cut into chunks
1 large splash of brandy
125 ml white wine
Salt to taste
5 ml cayenne pepper
5 ml black pepper
5 ml ground nutmeg
1 can Italian chopped tomatoes
20 g dark chocolate
1 can baked beans
1 red bell pepper, chopped, and fresh coriander (for serving)

Method

  1. Sauté: Heat the oil in a large pot and stir-fry the chopped onions and dried herbs until soft.
  2. Brown: Add the sugar and minced beef, breaking up any large chunks as it cooks.
  3. Combine: Stir in the garlic, tomato paste and pre-cooked soybeans until well incorporated.
  4. Simmer: Add the celery, brandy, white wine, salt, cayenne pepper, black pepper, nutmeg and canned tomatoes. Simmer uncovered for 20 minutes.
  5. Finish: Add the dark chocolate and baked beans, and cook for another 5 minutes until heated through.
  6. Serve: Remove from the heat, stir in the raw chopped red pepper and garnish with fresh coriander.

Additional information
Leftovers are great as a taco filling with sour cream and guacamole!
