IN TURBULENT TIMES IT IS NECESSARY TO PAUSE FOR A MOMENT AND REFLECT ON WHO WE ARE, WHAT WE STAND FOR, AND HOW WE WILL REALISE OUR OBJECTIVE OF ENSURING THE SUSTAINABILITY OF SOUTH AFRICA’S GRAIN PRODUCERS THROUGH PROFITABILITY. THE CENTRAL QUESTION REMAINS WHETHER SOUTH AFRICAN GRAIN PRODUCERS ARE BETTER OFF BECAUSE GRAIN SA EXISTS THAN THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN HAD IT NOT EXISTED.

The answer lies in the powerful principle ‘together we are stronger’ as reflected in our logo. Grain SA exists because of what grain producers can achieve by voicing a unified message and a clear vision that are authentic, relevant, and resonate with the realities and dynamics of grain and oilseed production, rural communities, and society in South Africa. This principle shapes not only who we are but how we engage with all role players, which is evident during the yearly NAMPO Harvest Day at NAMPO Park.

At Grain SA we engage with facts, focus, and fortitude. Our advocacy starts through personal conversations and relationship-building that establish trust before asserting our position. Grounded in data and facts, we contribute constructively rather than criticise without context. While we avoid public protests, we escalate issues to the highest business, political, government, or legal levels whenever producer interests demand it, ensuring that our voice is heard and respected. One of the first insights I gained about Grain SA is that the organisation’s reputation is built on credibility. Our partners take us seriously because our views are grounded in facts, not trends or personal favour, and this trust has been earned over years of consistent, rigorous engagement.

Grain SA’s style of engagement is grounded in an uncompromising principle. We advocate firmly on behalf of our members while staying credible enough to be listened to and trusted enough to deliver outcomes. This distinguishes us as a purposeful, results-driven organisation. We are not a ‘noise organisation’ that seeks attention. We are a producer organisation dedicated to advancing the interests of South African grain producers in a meaningful and sustainable manner.

This approach is neither automatic nor obvious in today’s environment. We operate in a landscape dominated by fleeting attention, click-driven content, and self-proclaimed ‘experts’ sharing appealing but unverified soundbites. It can be tempting to ask ourselves whether we should adopt the same approach to satisfy immediate expectations and signal to our members that we are advocating on their behalf. Yet we must pause and make a deliberate choice between loud, reactive messaging and measured, principled engagement that delivers sustainable results.

Our approach must be deliberate – building relationships on rationality and partnerships and plans on proof and principle while we engage with focus, professionalism, and strategic insight to ensure our actions are credible and deliver lasting impact. At Grain SA engagement is not about rhetoric or visibility but about translating the real-world challenges of producers into well-reasoned positions, actionable solutions, and effective advocacy that achieves results.

For us, advocacy begins where it matters most – at the farm gate. Our positions are grounded in what producers are experiencing such as input costs, price cycles, crop conditions, risk exposure, and the practical realities of running a grain business in South Africa. We convert the realities on the ground into clearly defined issues backed by evidence and actionable policy solutions. We believe that strong and effective advocacy begins with accuracy, thorough understanding, and evidence-based insight, not with emotion or unsubstantial claims.

The importance of partnerships
Through collaboration we strengthen our impact without ever compromising producer priorities. Many challenges cannot be solved by a single voice alone. To achieve meaningful results we partner with agribusinesses, researchers, financiers, logistics partners, and government institutions. One principle remains non-negotiable: the interests of producers are always central. Partnerships are tools to amplify our voice, not compromises of principle.

Equally, we measure success by impact, not activity. True success is achieved when producers experience tangible improvements, including clearer regulations, fewer bottlenecks, fairer implementation, stronger competitiveness, reduced risk, and a more resilient sector. As Grain SA advocates with steady hands, evidence-based insight, and unwavering persistence, our focus will remain on outcomes by continually refining strategies to deliver measurable benefits to producers.

At the 2026 Grain SA Congress we will have the opportunity to come together, reaffirm our shared commitment and strategic pathway, and encourage one another to move forward with determination, unity, and courage. Through this spirit of collaboration, credibility, and relentless dedication, Grain SA continues to demonstrate why grain producers exist and why the world is a better place because of them.
