chief executive officer, Grain SA

Dr Dirk Strydom, managing director, Nampo (Pty) Ltd

As South Africa’s grain industry continues to modernise, the demand for skilled, work-ready professionals is growing rapidly. Today’s farms rely on advanced machinery, digital systems, and precision technologies that require more than just conventional know-how – they need technicians, artisans, and farm managers with up-to-date training and excellent technical abilities. A key consideration is to ensure that there is a direct link between skills development and the employment opportunities within the agricultural sector.
This is where NAMPO-Tech comes in. NAMPO-Tech will be an industry-integrated training academy that aims to support the agricultural sector by equipping students with the technical and vocational skills needed to thrive in the fast-evolving world of grain production and its associated value chains. The academy will focus on ensuring the long-term competitiveness, profitability, and sustainability of the grain farming industry.
A practical response to industry needs
NAMPO-Tech is developing in close collaboration with equipment manufacturers, agribusinesses, government and other industry partners to address one of the agricultural sector’s most pressing challenges: the shortage of skilled professionals within key roles and the aging population of skilled artisans. From heavy machinery and millwrighting to mechatronic technicians, skilled machinery operators, and farm supervisors, the sector has a growing need for individuals who can keep modern farms operating cost-effectively, efficiently, and sustainably.
Existing training institutions are struggling to meet the specialised crop production demand for appropriately skilled technicians. Most economists also agree that the critical skills shortage in South Africa will put a limit on the long-term economic growth prospects of our country, and industries should proactively respond to this pressing need. This skills shortage is particularly acute in rural areas and specialised crop production technology. NAMPO-Tech intends to fill this gap by offering industry-aligned occupational qualifications accredited by the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) that prepare students to step into the workforce with confidence.

Hands-on industry-aligned learning
The academy’s programmes will follow a farm-synchronised, work-integrated learning model, giving students real-world exposure to the equipment and systems used in today’s grain and mixed farming operations. This practical approach ensures that graduates not only understand the theory but are comfortable working in real agricultural settings from day one.
NAMPO-Tech is looking at offering training in high-demand trades such as heavy machinery and diesel mechanics, millwrighting, and mechatronics, and aims to expand into vocational programmes such as plant and livestock production, conservation agriculture, precision technology and farm equipment operator training.
Developing agriculturally competent and prepared professionals
In addition to technical skills, NAMPO-Tech places a strong focus on work-readiness and soft skills. Students must understand what it takes to be a producer or a professional within the agricultural sector. Problem-solving, teamwork, communication, and financialliteracy will be integrated into the academy’s offering. The goal is to prepare graduates not only to perform specific tasks but to adapt, lead, and contribute meaningfully within agricultural workplaces. Design-thinking principles will be embedded across the curriculum to encourage creative approaches to on-farm challenges and innovation in everyday operations.
Creating entrepreneurial opportunities for rural communities
NAMPO-Tech’s inclusive model is designed to make training accessible to a wide range of students, especially from rural communities. With dual-medium instruction and affordable programme costs, the academy aims to remove barriers to entry while offering pathways to employment, entrepreneurship, and personal growth. By training local youth in skills that are relevant to their communities, NAMPO-Tech will contribute to broader goals of rural development and economic inclusion. The academy aims to act as an incubator for entrepreneurial opportunities and job creation.
A collaborative, sustainable approach
NAMPO-Tech is closely aligned with national skills development priorities and AgriSETA’s Grains and Cereals Sub-Sector Skills Plan. A collaborative model, supported by both the private sector and training authorities, will ensure that the academy remains responsive to industry needs and continues to deliver value over time.
This facility represents a practical and forward-looking response to South Africa’s agricultural skills needs. By combining technical excellence with real-world experience and essential soft skills, the academy is set to play an important role in job creation, rural economic development and in strengthening the country’s agricultural capacity – one skilled graduate at a time.
